Alleviating poverty, building futures
Following a chance meeting in a pub in Edinburgh, Martin found himself on his way to Baworo ICCES in autumn 2005. With his arrival coinciding with that of the long awaited rains, living up to the expectations of the superstitious locals would be a challenge. But Martin got fully involved with the Centre, teaching English, Maths and anything else he fancied. He also oversaw fundraising for the construction of a new boy’s hostel and arranged work placements and industry visits for the students. He found that he preferred making fufu to eating it, but nevertheless enjoyed the simple pleasures of village life. Martin is a keen athlete, and he works for the Government Olympic Executive. Amongst other fundraising stunts, in 2007 he cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats to finance student scholarships.
